Why and How to Memorize Bible Verses
(This page is under construction.)
People who helped me in memorizing included: my 2nd grade teacher, Miss Vaughn, (who taught us John 3:16 & 17 - 1941-42); Dan Graham (who led me to Christ in 1943), Oscar Lowry, Jack VanImpe, Paul Ferguson, Dawson Trotman and The Navigators, Ron Hood, N.A. Woychuck, Norm Lewis, Lorne Sanny, Martha Grace Green, Dr. J. R. Faulkner, Savoy Adams.
I am indebted to my several teachers at Tennessee Temple College who required scripture memorization. Savoy Adams required students in his 1 Peter Class to memorize the entire book. My teacher of Christian Doctrines required us to memorize the outline and supporting scriptures of every chapter in the doctrine book and to write it from memory as our final exam.
Bible Memorization is one of five ways God commands us to take in His word. God tells us to: Hear, Read, Study, Memorize, and Meditate - (HRSMM - Hrs. of M & M's). We are posting Bible verses for you to read and memorize in card form and page form. You can download and print them on your PC Printer. Some pages are not posted yet but we are working on it. We recommend that you use the lighter "cover stock" instead of the heavier "card stock" to preserve the rollers on your PC printer. Card stock will wear off the rollers on your printer unless your printer is made for card stock.
We hope you will take the time to read through the instructional material posted in several documents and posted in several places. The pages overlap and repeat some, but repetition is the teacher’s glue. The book: Paul Ferguson the Fighter, contains a chapter on memorization. He memorized over 8,000 (eight thousand) verses and worked at keeping them up until his death at age 80 (July 16, 1916---Nov.15, 1996).
One of the greatest maxims of memorization came from Mrs. Ellen Hermann who required her students of classical piano to memorize ALL the major and minor scale, triads, solid chords and broken chords in EVERY key. She taught me the supreme lesson of concentrating on the difficult spots of music until they were thoroughly memorized and then to incorporate them into the larger piece of music. I was learning the central truth of memorizing scripture while studying piano with her. There are many ways to memorize but some methods are more productive than others.
